Determine Your Business Structure:

Determine Your Business Name:

  • MT Secretary of State’s Office: Application for Business Name 

  • Check the availability of your new business name: Business Entity Search

  • Secure a URL in the new business name and for your new website:

  • Open a business checking account

  • Order some business cards

File the Appropriate Documents and ID Numbers:

  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS): Apply for an EIN   800-829-4933

  • MT Department of Revenue: MT Income Tax Withholding  Taxpayer Access Point (TAP), 406-444-6900

  • State Unemployment Insurance (SUI): Unemployment Division  MT Department of Labor & Industry, 406-444-3834

  • Check in the state where you business is based for other types of required tax accounts

  • Worker’s Compensation Insurance (many insurance brokers can assist with this)

  • Liability, Errors & Omissions, and other types of necessary Business Insurance (ask your local and trusted insurance provider)
