How will your Company Honor and Remember those who Served?

By Andrea Feinberg

It’s Memorial Day this weekend, and, while so many look on it as the start of a summer season, its power is in its acknowledgement of those who gave so much for their country, our country. To show the importance of this event, and perhaps to honor family or employees on your team, here are suggestions that can improve company culture and productivity:

1. Community Service Event

Organize a company-wide community service event. Perhaps helping at a local veteran's organization, cleaning up a park, or volunteering at a soup kitchen. Giving back to the community can foster a sense of teamwork and purpose among employees.

2. Memorial Day Tribute

Host a tribute or memorial service to honor veterans within your community or those related to your employees who may have lost their lives in service. Invite a guest speaker, such as a veteran, to share their experiences. This can build a sense of respect and appreciation within your team.

3. Team-Building Activities

Plan a day of team-building activities with a Memorial Day theme. This could include discussion or memories of veterans, members of your team or their families, who lost their lives in service and the special memories their surviving loved ones retain.  Incorporate activities that require teamwork and collaboration to enhance bonding among employees.

4. Workshops on Leadership and Resilience

Organize workshops or seminars on leadership, resilience, and stress management. Bringing in a motivational speaker or a professional coach can inspire employees and provide them with valuable skills for both their personal and professional lives.

5. Recognition and Appreciation Ceremony

Use the occasion to recognize and appreciate your employees’ hard work and dedication. Hold an awards ceremony or appreciation lunch where you highlight employees' achievements and contributions.

6. Wellness Day

Consider organizing a wellness day focused on mental and physical health. Offer activities such as yoga sessions, mindfulness workshops, or health screenings. Providing resources for well-being can show employees that you care about their holistic health.

7. Employee Story Sharing

Encourage employees to share stories of veterans in their families or their own experiences. This can be done through a company-wide meeting or an internal blog. Sharing personal stories can build a stronger sense of community and empathy within the team.

8. Support a Cause

Choose a charity that supports families of passed service members and organize a fundraising event. This could be a fun run, a charity auction, or a donation drive. Involving employees in charitable activities can foster a sense of unity and purpose.

By engaging in these meaningful activities, you can create a positive impact on your employees, strengthen your company culture, help employees see your devotion to their personal lives, and enhance overall productivity.
